RLPL

September 6th is National Read a Book Day!

Reading promotes lifelong learning-  Did you know babies chewing on books, toddler scribbles, and the same story read over and over are a part of early literacy? Talk! Sing! Play! Read! Write!

Research Readers- You’ll love our new MORE online catalog powered by Encore—every search (from title to subject) will also pull articles from the EBSCOHost database and will be organized in a separate tab. (New Features) To view any of these articles, you simply log into your MORE account with last name and library card number.

eReaders will appreciate the ability to find and sort by availability eTitles from Overdrive within the new catalog as well.  Speaking of eBooks, Freading is another great site for eBooks (with apps for apple and android devices) free to check out with your library card.  Our favorite feature: Always available eBooks- if you see it-you can download it! (to see if your device is compatible or learn more, visit the Freading Frequently Asked Questions page.

Maybe you like to escape into a good novel and travel along with the characters or perhaps you reading your current book simply because the cover looked good (sometimes, it is okay to judge a book by its cover-we’ve discovered many a good book simply by its cover!) Some of our favorites have come from our patrons and our Good Reads Page has shelves  with titles from RLPL Page TurnersSummer Reading Program Patron Reviews, Storytime books, and more.

Have you checked out our Lucky Day collection-you’ll find all sorts of great looking covers on these high hold items.   These books are ordered just for our RL patrons (with limited checkout time of 1 week and .25 day fines accrued each day beyond due date) and if you find the latest best seller or newest released book on the shelf despite a long wait list- it’s your LUCKY Day!

No holds! No renewals! No Wait!

Reading for fun, for research and/or assignments, to expand your mind, to learn about new environments, things, people, or to escape reality for a spell—all good reasons to read, Read, READ!  Have any recommendations? Share them with us on Facebook or Twitter pages (use #ReadABookDay).

Staff Picks

Recent Reads:

The Pink Suit  by Nicole Mary Kelby an interesting perspective of the Jackie Kennedy era as the lives of the seamstress behind the now infamous Pink Suit are the main characters with Mrs. Kennedy referred to as The Wife, a background character.  The seamstress and the Kennedy’s are connected by a shared heritage and that bond was enough to refer to her as one of their own.

Vacationers  by Emma Straub described as “a great read-funny family drama.”

The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Dad is Fat by comedian Jim Gaffigan

Me Before You by Jo Jo Moyes (quick read that is thought provoking).  A good book club choice.

Storyteller by Jodi Picoult.

Pride and Prejudice

Currently Reading:

Kings of the Earth by Jon Clinch – loosely based on factual event—intense and involved read with great character development

One plus One by Jojo Moyes

June is Outdoor Month

Of course it is!  We’ve been cooped up all winter long and the National Wildlife Federation urges us to get outside and explore and connect with nature which not only reduces stress but awakens your senses to the environment around you.

This Friday Readapalooza is happening outdoors with free hotdogs, sno cones, prizes, many activity booths along with a Jumpy Castle, our friends from Hunt Hill, and Master Gardeners from the Rice Lake Garden Club.

Saturday is the first annual “An Evening Under the Stars,” a fund raising event to support the Rice Lake Public Library and its many programs that would not be possible without their support.

Do you Geocache? RLPL has 2 Garmin GPS units for you to check out and try your hand at this fun hobby that is great fun on your own, with a friend, or as a family.

Who doesn’t like outdoor movies?  Bring a lawn chair or blanket and join us for Family (June showing:  Rise of the Guardians), Teen (June showing Ironman: Rise of Technovore), or Adult (June showing Silver Linings Playbook)  Outdoor Movie Nights this summer.

Hunting and fishing, of course, are popular outdoor activities and Turtle Lake native Billy Molls will be herein August 3rd  presenting:  Hunt For the Headwaters: Life, Love, and Grizzly Bears.

“The past 16 years that I have guided in Alaska has been the greatest education

in my life. The hunting in Alaska is second to none, but it’s the lifestyle that one leads

while being there that I enjoy most. I hope to share some of what I experience, learn,

and feel when I am there.”

We look forward to meeting and sharing Billy’s experiences through video, photos, and stories that Billy says will “educate and entertain all who attend.”

What summer activities keep you busy in the great outdoors? Share them with us  on our Facebook Page :)
